The biggest shift has been in herd health. With a weekly herd health visit every Monday, George has seen a marked drop in the drugs and treatments the herd needs, and far fewer cows now require synchronisation programmes to get back in calf. Conception rates have improved to the point where the farm is comfortably hitting its target of 12 to 15 pregnancies a week.

Yields, Light, and Lower Running Costs
Milk yields have risen too, with the shed now averaging around 40 litres a day per cow, ranging from 39 up to 43 depending on the time of year. The extra daylight has also cut electricity use — the shed’s photocell lighting now switches on later and off earlier through the day, and George says the building stayed noticeably cooler than outside through a run of hot summer days.
George also points to a wider benefit beyond the herd itself, noting why more farmers are now putting the same roofing over milking parlours as well as sheds: older, dimmer parlours could feel like “little dungeons” to work in day after day, and a bright, airy building makes a real difference for staff as well as cattle.
